Karen is a board certified veterinary clinical pathologist who is passionate about diagnostic clinical pathology, haematology and student and post-graduate veterinary education.
She graduated from the University of Queensland in 2002 and then worked in mixed animal clinical practice in Melbourne for three years before completing a rotating small animal internship at Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre and then working for a year in the United Kingdom. She then moved to the United States to pursue a Haematology and Transfusion Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and there she found her love of clinical pathology. She completed a clinical pathology residency and lectureship at the University of Pennsylvania and earned ACVP board certification in 2010.
In 2011, she returned to Australia, and worked in diagnostics for three years and then academia for six years. Since 2020, she has worked for Antech Diagnostics while also holding an honorary academic position at the University of Queensland, teaching through the Centre for Veterinary Education and working on a part-time PhD investigating red bellied black snake venom effects on RBCs.
Her specific interests are in diagnostic cytology, haematology, transfusion medicine and snake venom research.
